There are millions of ringtones available.  You have to select ones you like and then add it to your cellphones.  Most of older ringtones (i.e. older songs or music files) for which copyright protection has expired and are in public domains are free and you can get it for free.  However, new songs ringtones particularly for the popular top of the charts songs are not free.  They are sold at affordable price to cover the royalties. There are many sites on internet selling ringtones.

There are different ways to obtain ringtones to your phone.

1. You can get it as an sms.  You just have to enter your phone number on the website and ringtones will be sent as an sms to you or a download link will be sent to you as an sms.  You may be asked to provide a credit card or in most cases the charge will appear on your cellphone bill.

2. You can create a ringtones by yourself or download it on your computer from a ringtones website and then transfer the ringtone files to your cellphones via data cable.  

In current age and time most of the people prefer to download it directly via sms.  Also friends can share ringtones via bluetooth or infrared in certain cellphone models. iphone phones from apple can download ringtones from itunes.  

Some cell phones allow you to compose ringtones by typing keystrokes. You have to know the appropriate "key press sequence" or you can create a unique one for yourself.  This sequence is easily availabe online, however this method is less popular now a days with latest phones because sharing ringtones has become lot easier with newer generation of phones.

Now a days, you can practically have any audio piece as a ringtones in either monophonic or polyphonic format. Certainly polyphonic is much better.

With advancement in technology rintone technology continue to evolve, but if you personally ask me I stil love the good old traditional ring because only that ring has a power to wake me up from the sleep.
